Benoni police warn residents against opening false cases

They said false cases take up valuable police resources and time which could instead have been used to combat crime or save a life.

The Benoni police have issued a stern warning to residents not to open false cases because they are wasting police resources.

They said false cases take up valuable police resources and time which could instead have been used to combat crime or save a life.

This comes after a 43-year-old man appeared in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on February 17 on a charge of perjury.

The matter is remanded until February 22 for a formal bail hearing.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said the man opened a false case of a truck hijacking on February 7 around 10pm.

“He alleged he was hijacked on the N12 between the Snake Road and Putfontein off-ramps by traffic officers who were wearing uniforms,” said Sekele.

“The man told police he was stopped by the officers, then they asked for his licence. As he was giving it to them, they pointed a firearm at him.”

Sekele said the suspect alleged he was then blindfolded and didn’t see what happened afterwards.

A case of hijacking was then opened at the Benoni Police Station.

“Through thorough investigation by our dedicated detective it was revealed the man was not telling the truth. He had handed the vehicle to the alleged suspects,” she said.

The truck was loaded with drilling rods worth R750 000.
