Give the gift of life this Valentine’s Day with SANBS

Help paint Valentine’s Day red with liquid love and donate blood to save up to three lives with your one unit of blood.

During the pandemic where we have to practise social distancing and cannot have any physical contact with friends or family, it causes us to long for this much-needed affection.

Valentine’s Day is celebrated globally each year by showering loved ones with gifts and showing them your love.

However, this year SANBS suggested a different kind of gift. The gift of life. Why not on Valentine’s Day everyone takes a break from the norm of showering their loved ones with chocolates, roses or cards and celebrate it in a meaningful way by donating much-needed blood.

SANBS encouraged all regular and potential blood donors to step forward and share the love by donating a pint of blood. Every two seconds daily there is someone who needs blood.

Since blood cannot be manufactured and has a limited shelf life, the supply must constantly be replenished by blood donors.

In South Africa, 3 500 units of blood are transfused daily to patients in dire need of blood and blood products, yet only one per cent of the population donates blood.

Minimum requirements to be a donor:

• Be between the ages of 16 and 75
• Weigh 50kg or more
• Be in good health
• Consider your blood safe for transfusion to a patient
• Lead a sexually safe lifestyle.
