Public reminded to surrender their illegal or unwanted firearms this weekend

Residents are urged not to wait until the last minute to visit the offices.

Police are reminding the public to surrender their unwanted or illegal firearms as the firearm amnesty will close on January 31.

The new firearm amnesty was approved by Parliament at the end of July for a period of six months, commencing on August 1.

The Benoni firearms office will open on Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 9pm.

The Putfontein firearms office will open on Saturday and Sunday from 9am to midnight.

The Actonville, Crystal Park, Daveyton, Etwatwa SAPS firearm’s offices have not yet confirmed if they will open.

Those who surrender their firearms during the period of amnesty will be required to complete and sign the necessary forms at the nearest police station and must insist on a copy of the SAPS 548 (amnesty form).

The amnesty also offers an opportunity to surrender firearms of which their licences have expired and allows owners to apply for new licences for these weapons.

Police said no indemnity will be granted for firearms used to commit any crime.

All firearms that have been handed in will undergo ballistic testing to ensure they have not been used in the commission of any crime before they can be considered for destruction.

Residents are urged not to wait until the last minute to visit the offices.

The public should contact their local firearms office, situated at police stations, for more information and the times they can hand in their firearms.
