Benoni Police warn of spike in theft of motor vehicles

The warning comes after several cases were reported at the beginning of January.

The Benoni SAPS has warned residents of a spike in theft of motor vehicles in the area. The warning comes after several cases were reported at the beginning of January.

The most recent thefts out of motor vehicles occurred in Rynfield, Northmead and Lakefield. The incidents occur in the morning and afternoons. Spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said they are encouraging motorists to be vigilant at all times.

“It is therefore advisable for motorists to ensure that their vehicle is properly secured by activating their security alarm as well having a gear lock,” urged Sekele.

“Before leaving your vehicle double check that the alarm has been activated and always check your surroundings for any suspicious people.”

Sekele said criminals tend to use a remote jammer to gain access to the vehicle. Remote jammers get within close proximity to your vehicle and use a signal frequency to jam your own remote from functioning.”

“Criminals are opportunists, who will pounce on unsuspecting victims or break into vehicles,” she said. “We also urge residents to conduct regular checks with companies to ensure that tracking devices are activated.” All cases were opened at the Benoni Police Station.

Should you notice any suspicious vehicles or persons loitering in the area, notify the Benoni SAPS on 011 747 0000 or call crime stop on 08600 10111 or use the MYSAPS app.
