City Times turns 100!

We invite our readers to share their City Times memories and congratulations with us

Amid an uncertain time in our country’s history, we are excited to announce the City Times is celebrating its centenary this year.

Founded by William Hills, a dedicated journalist with a strong desire to bring the truth to the people, the first edition of the newspaper hit the streets in September 1921.

The Hills family’s involvement spurred the newspaper to great heights as it grew and prospered under the guidance of Hills’ eldest son, William Haigh (Billy), and his grandson, William Edward Haigh Hills (also known as Billy), who ran the publication until 1982 when he sold it to the Caxton group.

The City Times has a proud history of serving the community with its wide coverage of local affairs, ranging from council news to crime, schools, social events, sport and contributions from readers.

Much of the success of the publication remains ongoing training and development offered to all staff by Caxton Local Media to ensure news gathering, reporting, sales efforts and community involvement remain relevant and offer value to our readers and advertisers.

Research indicates:

• The City Times is the most read newspaper title in local homes (83 per cent of residents in Benoni read the City Times each week).

We look forward to a year of celebrating 100 years of keeping the community informed and invite our readers to share their City Times memories (stories and photographs) and congratulations with us by email to the editor, Lana O’Neill, at lanan@caxton.co.za
