Report theft and vandalism

Residents are encouraged to report theft to the police.

The Ekurhuleni metro has highlighted that theft and vandalism of steel and metal infrastructure, which includes stormwater frames and signage, is a common problem in Benoni.

This follows a statement released by Sinethemba Matiwane, Ward 73 councillor, who raised his concerns regarding the theft of stop signs in Western Extension, and the vandalism of time slot allocations on traffic flow signage at Benoni West School in Railway Avenue.

He said such theft poses an unnecessary risk to learners and pedestrians.

“The signage is vitally important to pedestrian safety as it regulates and controls traffic on the busy road to accommodate learners crossing when they arrive and leave the school.”

The metro’s spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, said the total price to replace these signs ranges between R650 and R800, depending on the size of the signs.

Matiwane warns that the vandalism and theft of signage is a criminal offence and urges residents to report these transgressions to the Benoni police on 011 747 0000, as well as to the Ekurhuleni metro on 011 999 6429 (during office hours) and the call centre on 0860 54 3000.

Residents are also encouraged to report any incidents via email (call.centre@ekurhuleni.gov.za or Tlabo.molapo@ekurhuleni.gov.za).
