Tips for safety around wild animals

With summer being the busiest season for most south African nationals parks, the potential for run-ins with wildlife increases – and so do visits to the emergency room.

Here are some tips from Netcare on how to assess a run in with a wild animal:

Though most people imagine lions or elephants are the animals to watch out for.

Even small mammals can pose a risk.

• Avoid animals that might be behaving strangely.

• Stay connected. Be sure to pack your phone so you can call for help if needed.

• Be aware that even the cubs of animals can easily injure you.

• Teach your children about safety around animals wild or not.

• If going on a game drive discuss the route with family or other passengers and map it out.

• Keep your distance from wild animals.

• When in nature be aware of your surroundings.

• Maintain a safe distance from riverbanks.

• Consider wearing protective clothing such as snake protection.

• Always have a first aid kit handy for unforeseen injuries and illnesses.
