Lions raise awareness on diabetes

President Beaulieu Maré said that according to the International Diabetes Federation, 50 per cent of people with type two diabetes are unaware they have the disease.

The Benoni Lakes Lions Club hosted a Diabetes Awareness Day on November 2 at Rynfield Pharmacy.

Community members were offered free screening for blood sugar, blood pressure and eyesight, using the Lions’ Operation Brightsight spot vision screener.

President Beaulieu Maré said that according to the International Diabetes Federation, 50 per cent of people with type two diabetes are unaware they have the disease.

“Diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness in adults,” she said.

Lions Christmas cakes and boerewors rolls were sold at the event and residents could also have gift wrapping done by Lions members for a donation towards the club.
