Labour dispute causes disruption at Northmead retailer

The source said it is not a robbery and nobody is “locked inside” against their will, as reported on some social media groups.

A source at Northmead Square has confirmed a labour dispute is taking place inside Checkers today (December 10).

Members of a political party and a workers’ union are on scene, along with security guards employed by the mall.

The situation has been said to “be under control”.

The dispute reportedly stems from an incident between a staff member and a member of management during which the staff member had hot tea thrown on her.

The source said it is not a robbery and nobody is “locked inside” against their will, as reported on some social media groups.

In a statement seen by the City Times, the Shoprite Holdings Group said of the incident between the staff member and manager:

“Checkers strongly disapproves of such conduct and a formal disciplinary investigation is underway to establish the facts.

“We are very aware of our responsibility towards all members of our staff, which includes merchandisers and contract workers from other service providers to provide a professional working environment.

“On completion of our investigation, appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the law and the company’s code of conduct, which applies to all management and staff.”
