DA retains wards 27 and 28

The by-elections for Benoni final outcome.

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) announced the results of the 24th by-elections held across 17 municipalities in all nine provinces on December 9.

Results per party:

The ANC
• Retained 12 wards
• Lost one ward
• Won five new wards.

The DA
• Retained six wards
• Lost two wards.

The Land Party
• Won one new ward.

The Better Residents Association
• Lost three wards.

Average turnout in the by-elections was 34.56 per cent with the highest turnout being 62.93 per cent (Ward 3 in NC084 – Kheis) and the lowest being 11.72 per cent (Ward 15 in the City of Cape Town).

• Lornette Jayne Joseph (DA) is the new councillor for Ward 27.
The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 municipal elections, with 74.26 per cent of the votes cast compared to 91.89 per cent in the 2016 elections.
Voter turnout was 26.11 per cent.

• Mary Elizabeth Goby ( DA) is the new councillor for Ward 28.
The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 municipal elections, with 78.72 per cent of the votes cast compared to 90.62 per cent in the 2016 elections.
Voter turnout was 27.87 per cent.

Final results for Ward 28:

• DA – 78.72 per cent

• ANC – 2.84 per cent

• EFF – 0.35 per cent

• FF+ – 12.50 per cent

• Independent – 5.68 per cent

• % Poll – 27.78 per cent

Final results for Ward 27:

• DA – 74.43 per cent

• VF – 20.36 per cent

• ANC – 1.51 per cent

• EFF – 0.21 per cent

• Independent – 3.46 per cent.
