Rotary needs a hand to prepare Meals on Wheels

Apart from help with preparing the meals, the club will gladly accept any and all donations of non-perishable food to supplement their efforts

The Rotary Club of Benoni Van Ryn needs help to provide the elderly with Meals on Wheels this festive season.

Brian Ancient, a member of the club, explained they have been involved with the service for about five years, giving the Meals on Wheels team a break of three weeks over the festive season by taking over the service.

This year they need to provide at least 26 meals to the needy on a Tuesday and Thursday on a budget of R35 per meal.

“We strive to provide a meal consisting of a meat, startch, vegetables and a small dessert. In the past, a supermarket prepared the meals for us in their kitchen per head cost, and we would collect and deliver.

“We are, however, exploring other options this year – perhaps a small local business which does catering or home food delivery would be kind enough to help make the meals for us at the R35 per head? We would appreciate any help we can get in this regard,” Brian said.

The recipients will also get a slice of Christmas cake with their meals on Christmas eve.

This year they will be feeding residents in Government Village, Deneys Conradie and Pauline Davis Court.

Any and all non-perishables will also be gratefully accepted, to supplement their efforts and to enable Rotary to help even more people.

“The need is greater this year due to the economy, but the economy has also sadly forced us to scale down, so we really rely on public support,” Brian concluded.
