St Dunstan’s remembers soldiers

Dr Steve Whitelaw addressed the gathering on the continued relevance of the day.

Covid-19 may be the cause of social distancing, but social distancing could never be the cause of St Dunstan’s College commemorating the annual Remembrance Day.

“Like so many other things in 2020, our annual service was severely affected by the social distancing requirements caused by the pandemic,” said campus head of marketing, Mandy Lachenicht.

“However, the importance of the day in the history of the school meant that it was nonetheless marked on November 11.”

Lachenicht explained that 50 Grade Eight learners who did not attend the Preparatory School and may therefore never have experienced such an occasion, were invited to attend the service where they were joined by the heads of schools and chairperson of council.

“Dr Steve Whitelaw addressed the gathering on the continued relevance of the day. Normal features of the service such as poetry reading, playing of the Last Post, holding of a minute’s silence, and the laying of wreaths were observed,” said Lachenicht.

“Next year we hope to again invite our friends from local service and veterans’ organisations to our normal ‘whole school’ event.”
