Contractor drama halts work at Northmead tower

The project is currently 76 per cent complete as work on the tower walls and roofing is outstanding.

The Northmead Elevated Water Tower in Hospital Road that was expected to be complete in December has now been delayed for an additional four months as the contractor is facing “internal challenges”.

According to Ekurhuleni metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe, the metro is in the process of applying the necessary sanctions, as provided for in the contract between the metro and the contractor, including an application of penalties following the delay in the project.

Ward 25 councillor Pieter Henning raised his concerns to the metro after a site visit on November 2.

“It was found that this site has been abandoned by the contractor. The site camp is deserted, with no security or any indication of any activity,” said Henning.

Gadebe said the lack of security has been due to “internal challenges”, however, the matter has been resolved.

“It should be noted that in the event of any theft or damage to any material, the metro is not liable as the site belongs to the contractor until handed back on project completion,” he said.

Once completed, the tower will be the biggest in Ekurhuleni.

The project is currently 76 per cent complete as work on the tower walls and roofing is outstanding.
