Tavern murderer sentenced to 17 years

The sentence was handed down by Magistrate Mitzi Schutte.

Brian Khoza (34) was sentenced to 17 years’ direct imprisonment for murder, attempted murder and being in the country illegally in the Benoni Regional Court on September 2.

Khoza murdered a 22-year-old man on October 1, 2019, at a tavern in Emaphupheni, Etwatwa.

Etwatwa SAPS spokesperson Sgt Khensani Mathebula said police were called to attend to a incident of assault and a tavern.

As they were driving to the scene, they found a man being assaulted by members of the community.

“They stopped and rescued the man from the angry mob and then proceeded to the tavern,” said Mathebula.

“When they arrived, a witness told the police that the man they rescued was the one who had stabbed the deceased.”

Mathebula said the deceased was found lying in a pool of blood and they also found another man had been stabbed in the upper body, also by Khoza.

Det Sgt April Sikhosana investigated the case.

Station commander Col Molatelo Maoto commended the police and Sikhosana for their swift response to the complaint and for their efforts and commitment during the investigation.

The sentence was handed down by Magistrate Mitzi Schutte.
