Over 200 arrested in three days

All detainees facing various charges are expected to appear in the relevant magistrate’s courts soon.

It was a constructive weekend for EMPD officers, who made 265 arrests in three days in Ekurhuleni.

“Between August 28 and 30, officers conducted special operations where 265 arrests were made, eight reported stolen/hijacked vehicles recovered and jointly with local SAPS officers 136 taverns were visited for Covid-19 regulation compliance,” said EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng.

“During roving roadblocks in the eastern, northern and southern regions of the City, intoxicated male and female motorists between the ages of 20 and 59 had to be temporarily removed from the roadways.

“In the Actonville, Benoni, Daveyton, Duduza, Etwatwa, Springs and Tsakani areas, 53 tipsy drivers were apprehended and 16 taverns visited.”

Mokheseng said in the northern region, 60 intoxicated motorists found in Kempton Park, Thembisa, Clayville and Olifantsfontein areas were locked up and 23 shebeens visited.

“In the southern region 26 people were arrested while driving under the influence of alcohol in Alberton, Germiston and Katlehong areas and 63 clubs visited,” Mokheseng explained.

“The EMPD Specialised Services officers from different units arrested 106 drunk drivers.

“Out of 102 pubs visited, only nine complied with the Disaster Management Act. For now, the reluctant/s got away with a strong tongue lash from law enforcers.”

In Boksburg, Kempton Park and Thembisa areas, 20 suspects were also arrested for various crimes.

“Eight abandoned reported stolen/hijacked motor vehicles were recovered in Boksburg, Germiston and Katlehong areas before they were impounded at Van Ryn Deep Pound in Benoni for safekeeping,” he explained.

All detainees facing charges of malicious damage to property, possession of suspected stolen property, driving while intoxicated/while under the influence of alcohol, possession and dealing in narcotics were escorted to different police stations and are expected to appear in relevant magistrate’s courts soon.
