Local muso makes grilled cheese sandwiches a hit at Benoni Plaza

Benoni Agricultural Holdings musician Kimon Rayne is releasing and interesting new song, Sick Day, on August 21.

The song is about taking time for yourself, staying in bed all day and eating grilled cheese sandwiches.

“I’m an advocate for proper care of your mental health, which was partially the message behind this song. As a result, I decided I wanted to make and hand out grilled cheese sandwiches to anybody in need because I thought it would be a fun and helpful way to give back,” explained Rayne.

He planned to hold the event at Benoni Plaza and after reaching out to the Ekurhuleni metro, he was put in contact with SAPS Supt Lucky Mbele, who organised the location and protection at the plaza.

Friends Jennifer Appleton and Thayne Bradbury, from Lakefield, and Rayne’s girlfriend, Sarah Smith, also of Benoni AH, helped to make the day a success.

“We were grateful to have the police protection as things started getting out of hand and several police officers had to step in to control the crowd and help us hand the sandwiches out,” Rayne said. “They were exceptionally helpful. We could not have done it without them.”

Flow Wear Clothing sponsored part of the event. Rayne explained the company donates 10 per cent of their earnings to mental health organisations.

“It was a good collaboration I believe,” Rayne said.  “We will likely collaborate with them on future projects. I will be running a marketing campaign using the videos shot on the day, which will offer a donation portal in aid of mental health.”

The team handed out 250 grilled cheese sandwiches and orange slices at the plaza and the leftovers were handed out to others in need on their way home.

“I’ll be organising an event like this each time I release a new song as a way to give back, each time benefiting a different cause. As my music and my career grow, so will these events. Hopefully, one day we can make a real impact and not just feed a few people,” concluded Rayne.
