Benoni Flying Squad helps with Soweto arrests

The suspects, aged 26 to 53, face charges of possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition and possession of suspected stolen goods

On August 17, officers from various policing units, including the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS), swooped on a house in Soweto, arresting six suspects and recovering stolen items and an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

“At around 11am officers from the BFS, Johannesburg Central SAPS Robbery Reaction and JMPD reacted to information of a business robbery,” said BFS spokesperson WO Grant Giblin.

“A retail store at Carletonville Mall had been robbed of cellular phones and clothing items. As information continued to filter through, the policing units were directed to Soweto.

“The information eventually led to a house in Sitsetse Street, Emdeni. The units tactically entered the premises where they came across six suspects in a back room of the premises.” Giblin said a thorough search of the room led to the recovery of 49 cellphones and clothing allegedly taken in the business robbery.

“One suspect was found to be in possession of an unlicensed 9mm CZ pistol and 10 live rounds of ammunition,” he said. “All suspects were arrested immediately and goods to the estimated value of R100 000 confiscated. “A white Toyota Quantum allegedly used in the commission of the crime was also impounded.”
