Rynfield resident (17) becomes one of SA’s youngest radio presenters

The former Hoërskool Hans Moore learner is also furthering his studies online

A dream of eight years has come true for aspiring radio presenter, Jason Buys, when he joined SA Radio recently, making him one of the youngest presenters in radio.

The 17-year-old, better known by his listeners as ‘The Buys’, is the host of #SA Drive on weekdays from 4pm to 7pm.

Jason said he has always wanted to be a drive time host presenter, and he is glad to be finally one.

“I love being on radio because I get to interact with the audience, to engage in interviews with people I never thought I would talk to or even meet, and to playing music that my listeners want to hear. It is exhilarating to sit behind the mic and knowing I can entertain millions of listeners and keep them happy,” he said.

The Rynfield resident said being on the radio has been his dream for many years.

“I’ve spent hours daily listening to the radio, taking notes, recording it on my phone, and walking around in circles in our garden practicing to do radio,” he said. “I tried reaching out to so many radio stations asking them if I can meet one of their presenters or visit their studios. The journey was challenging with many phone calls not answered.”

But Jason never lost hope. He said when his mind is set on the things he wants, he works hard.

“I continued to practise more and focus more. I even tried another radio station. Also, I learnt how the system works, how the playlist works, how to engage with the listeners and how to deal with negativity – and, importantly, how to work with the microphone,” he said.

“I know nothing in life is easy, so you need to work hard and perhaps fail many times before you reach your goal. I am prepared for it. Hard work pays off, and that is what I tell myself every day before I switch on the mic.”

In a few years, Jason sees himself soaring in the industry, with millions of loyal listeners who cannot wait to hear him on air.

“I see myself being happy and where I’ve always wanted to be – on radio.”
