Girl Guides earn badges during lockdown

Teaching our members to wear masks and how to wash hands correctly has been imperative.

The Girl Guides in the Benoni district and surrounds have embraced technology during these unprecedented times and have kept active through online virtual camps for the Brownies and Guides, with girls joining in via Zoom, WhatsApp and email.

The girls have been on a virtual tour of Diagon Alley and made Harry Potter crafts.

A group of Benoni Rangers meant to travel to the United Kingdoms in June but couldn’t due to the pandemic went on a virtual tour of the English counties, with Cadbury World and London ranked as highlights.

Adult leader in Benoni Elaine van Zyl said many girls took part in the Malta Quarantine Challenge and loved it.

Rangers join the Cape West and Limpopo Rangers on a Wednesday evening and the girls take turns to run the meetings.

They also have quizzes and Pictionary competitions.

“Sadly, the lockdown has come with challenges as some of our members have not been able to connect due to lack of available resources,” she said.

Elaine added that Girl Guides endeavour to remain in contact with all during this time.

“We may not be able to meet in person, but we are still very active online.”
