Local SANDF regiment puts food on the tables of needy families

The commanding officer of Oliver Reginald Tambo Regiment suggested all members donate R50 to support the initiative

The Oliver Reginald Tambo Regiment came together to support needy community members with food parcels on July 10 in various areas around Benoni.

The initiative came as an instruction from the Chief of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) that all military bases must donate to their areas of responsibilities to families affected by Covid-19, and that is where the commanding officer of Oliver Reginald Tambo Regiment suggested that all members should donate R50 to support the initiative.

“I am very happy because we had difficulties with food here in the house, my guardian works as a domestic worker and does not earn enough, so we barely have enough food to last us in the house. I am grateful and I wish that they could carry on donating food to those in need, just like we were,” said Lebohang Nyathi, a Mayfield resident.

The donations took place mainly in Mayfield, Wattville and Benoni, where there were 12 families who were shortlisted to receive the food parcels.

Capt Mbulelo Tetani, WO Chris Craucamp army, Pastor Khaya Mnyanda and Pastor Paul, of the Methodist Church in Benoni, helped the military in identifying those families.

“This is a very great gesture and it will help me cope during this pandemic. I am thankful to anyone who has contributed and donated the food to us, this has impacted us positively and I am just overjoyed and grateful,” Mayfield resident Sasi Matonsi said.

“I feel good on behalf of the members who donated and managed to give 12 families something to put on the table,” said communications officer Capt Mbulelo Tetani.

Tetani added that any contributions are welcomed and can be dropped off at the Oliver Reginald Tambo Regiment offices, or contact him on 011 845 2143.
