The Benoni Police are warning residents to be more vigilant following the continuous house robberies in Rynfield.

Rynfield house robbed

A 52-year-old woman was assaulted during a house robbery on June 23 at around noon on Baines Street, Rynfield.

Spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said it is alleged that three men gained entry into the property by derailing the gate.

“They then forced open the door at the house and assaulted the woman,” said Sekele.

They took two laptops, two televisions, hard drives, jewellery and cellphone.

Sekele said the robber then proceeded to the next house in the same property.

“The domestic worker saw the robbers and she quickly ran back to the house and locked the door,” said Sekele.

“She told the 30-year-old home owner to hide. They then hid in two separate rooms.”

She said the men broke the front door and gained entry into the house.

“The owner got out of the house through the bathroom window to seek for help,” said Sekele.

The robbers took a PlayStation, X-Box, laptop and jewellery.

No arrests were made, police are investigating.

A case of house robbery was opened at the Benoni Police Station.

It is alleged that robbers were carrying a clobber axe and a sharp blade object.

The police have shared the following tips to help residents:

• Ensure that all doors are locked at all times, and that windows are closed when you are not at home. During the day (especially if you are alone in the house), make sure that gates are at all times closed and locked.

• Do not respond to strangers who are hooting in front of your gates if you are not expecting anyone.

• Ensure that tools such as axes, spades, picks, and ladders that can be used in an attack are locked away when you do not use them.

• Installing an alarm system, preferably connected to an armed response company, can act as an effective deterrent.

• Identify relatively safe places of refuge, such as the bathroom, toilet or storeroom.

• Report any suspicious activity you take note of on 10111, even if it is not directly in your household or directly call the relief commander on 082 332 4875.
