Farrarmere mom and friend blogging for the good of other moms

The duo brainstormed the Momday2Sunday blog in August last year because according to them parenting can be intimidating, but advice from others is always beneficial.

There is no perfect guide on how to be the perfect mom, but Benonian Denise Fourie and her friend, Carla van Vuuren, have a blog for moms that can make parenting a bit easier.

Carla, who lives in Pretoria, is a first time mother and Denise is a mother of two who lives in Farrarmere.

From just two moms brainstorming ideas, the duo has managed to reach a following of over 5 000 people on Facebook and Instagram.

“We loved the idea of sharing new innovative parenting ways that reflects our own real and authentic parenting styles,” Denise said.

“We share the good times and the more challenging ones.

“We want to put a stop to insta-perfect Momhood, which is intimidating, so we share our experiences with like-minded moms who need to know that it is okay if everything is not always okay.

“We share fun baby, toddler and tween activities that are not only fun for children but also add to their development.

“Many mothers only have the advice of their elders to follow which may or may not contribute positively to the development of young children.”

Chasing her dreams to the finish line

Denise added that some mothers are discouraged from breastfeeding due to misinformation.

“Our intention is to provide reliable and researched information to help young and new mothers, even veteran moms to make the right decisions when playing with, feeding and developing their children.

“If we can help one mom feel that she is a great mom without having to be perfect, then our mission is accomplished.”

When asked by the City Times how information is sourced Denise said: “Knowing what our strengths are allows us to complement each other.

“While I have my MBA in Motherhood and Master’s Degree in Scientific Googling (note there is no such thing – I’m a mom), Carla has her BSc in Human Movement Science and Nutrition as well as her Honours in BSc Kinderkinetics.

“She shares developmental activities that are aimed at stimulating growing children holistically.”

Carla is very well travelled and loves sharing her travel stories with the moms.

“She thinks outside the box and brings a colourful feel to our mom circle. She reviews most of our activities, including the recipes and dietary recommendations we share on our blog,” Denise explained.

“I add structure to the team and ensure that we stick to who we are. My forte includes research of activities, recipes and information that adds value to our moms.

“My background in the corporate environmental industry allows me to be creative using environmentally friendly materials in many of our activities.

“Being a mother of two, I share ideas and my own life experiences.”

They also have a network of colleagues and friends who are experts in their fields:

• We rely on the verified information that they write and share with us.

• We make use of Carla’s childhood development books that she obtained during her studies as well as other reputable references and childhood development literature.

Denise also explained the kind of activities mothers can find on their blog.

“We provide age appropriate activities that are fun and also have developmental milestones in mind.

“We are firm believers that children learn through play, and involvement from parents. This pulls our entire blog page together.

They also support healthy living and share recipes and meal plans that allow moms to make good food choices at mealtimes.

“We also share information with regards to unhealthy foods that we very easily feed our kids unknowingly.

“We share positive breastfeeding stories as well as top tips in general day to day parenting.
