Local schools prepare for learner’s return

Schools for matrics and grade 7 learners opened on June 8.

The City Times recently visited the Kingsway Intermediate to observe some of the precautionary measures that will be taken to enable safe teaching and learning during the pandemic.

Schools for matrics and Grade 7 learners opened on June 8.

“We have 169 Grade 7 learners that attend  at our school so we will be dividing them into eight classes that consist of roughly twenty learners per class.

They will be monitored by two teachers in each class, one reserved to safeguard social distancing between learners,” said Busisiwe Velemani, HOD and School Based Support Team (SBST) nutrition co-ordinator.

All staff members and learners will be scanned, sanitized, and is expected to wear protective gear at all times. Teachers will be provided with plastic face masks, sanitizers for during teaching, as well as disposable plastic aprons. Learners will eat lunch in class during lunchtime to prevent crowds in the premises. Lastly, there are soaps and face masks for learners too so as to protect them from any possible exposure,” she added.

The local community volunteered to disinfect and clean the school premises.

We want our children to learn in a clean environment,” said Busisiwe Mhlongo, volunteer and Lindelani resident.

As community members we want to build a better future for our children, I also have two children that attend Kingsway.” she added.

School caretaker Sakhele Dyantyi said that he will do his utmost best to ensure the safety of learners.
