Council dumpsites are open

Disposal of general and non-hazardous solid waste in excess of 1 000kg is charged at a standard tariff of R260 40 per kilogram

Waste disposal sites and mini dumpsites are now open and residents are limited to dumping general and non-hazardous solid waste free of charge.

This is what you can dispose of at the council dumps in Ekurhuleni free of charge: Garden waste, rubble less than one cubic metre, recyclables paper, plastic, glass, cardboard, wood and metal.

Disposal of general and non-hazardous solid waste in excess of 1 000kg is charged at a standard tariff of R260 40 per kilogram.

Entry to dumpsites will only be allowed at authorised access points and you need to provide officials on site with particulars required with regard to the composition of the refuse you want to dispose of. The public must follow instructions given regarding the disposal point for their specific waste.

The measures are to prevent informal waste pickers who occasionally attempt to gain unauthorised entry.

No person is allowed to bring alcohol onto a landfill site, refuse transfer station or mini disposal site.

The metro recently revamped some of its mini disposal sites, including Leondale and Vosloorus disposal sites, to promote cleanliness and eradicate the scourge of illegal dumping in townships.

“We are gradually running out of space and need to do everything necessary to minimise the amount of waste reaching our disposal sites,” said MMC for Environment and Waste Management Services Khosi Mabaso. “It is our wish that these facilities must serve as catalysts to promote local economic development activities, such as composting.”

The sites are open seven days a week, including public holidays (except on Christmas day).

From April to September the sun sets earlier and it becomes unsafe for the public and staff due to reduced visibility.

Therefore, the operating hours for the sites are categorised into winter/other and summer/other periods of the year and are as follows:

* April to September: Daily from 7am to 6pm.

* October to March: Daily from 7am to 7pm.
