Cloverdene residents receive food donations

The donation was also part of celebrating Ramadan, which started on April 23.

Residents of Cloverdene welcomed food parcels from a local Islamic church and the Baitul Islam Foundation on May 22. The Crystal Park SAPS and Bronberg EMPD ensured adherence of social-distancing measures.

The donation was also part of celebrating Ramadan, which started on April 23. The foundation made its second donation in two weeks and primarily focused on assisting the most destitute in local communities.

“Today, we donated 100 food parcels to families in need. We took part in this initiative because we saw the impact of the lockdown. It is also the Month of Ramadan, which is the month of giving. We aren’t, however, stopping now,” said Sulaiman Shai, chairperson of Baitul Islam Foundation.

We want to offer a helping hand to those who do not have an income. At the moment we are focused on the Chief Albert Luthuli squatter camp. We want to help whenever we can. We are also seeking more sponsors in order to keep on helping.” he added.

The residents were relieved to receive the food parcels.

This has had a great impact as some people had no food at all. We are grateful for this donation and I hope they continue spreading love in other neighborhoods as well,” said Mpho Huma, a Cloverdene resident.

Another Cloverdene resident, Hlengiwe Zondi, was happy with the initiative. She said the donations were much needed and hopes this motivates other people to reach out to the needy.

The presence of the SAPS and EMPD was to ensure safety during the distribution of food.

“We are here as the Crystal Park SAPS, accompanied by the Bronberg EMPD, to monitor the procedure and ensure residents follow the safety measures. We did not encounter any problems here, but we are facing a high rate of motor vehicle theft in Crystal Park,” said Lerato Mopeli, communications and social crime officer for Crystal Park SAPS.
