#BooksBeyondWords: National Book Week invites you to gather the family for storytelling today

Every Saturday at 11am serves as a welcome distraction for the whole family as we try and find our feet in an uncharted territory.

National Book Week (NBW) will continue in its efforts to offer parents still struggling to adapt to the limitations imposed by the pandemic a refuge in its Books Beyond Words online storytelling events on its Facebook page.

The weekly event, initiated by NBW, is dedicated to encouraging leisure reading and promoting the importance of books.

Avid readers and lovers of stories can look forward to a digital distraction every Saturday as professional storytellers bring humble stories to life.

NBW is a joint initiative of the South African Book Development Council (SABDC) and the Department of Arts and Culture (DAC).

Elitha van der Sandt, CEO of the SABDC, said the weekly event was started to assist parents and children build a regular routine.

“Every Saturday at 11am serves as a welcome distraction for the whole family as we try and find our feet in an uncharted territory,” she said. “If the event can inspire a love of reading and books in children, it’s a habit we are positive they will take into adulthood.

“As much as this is about huddling together as a family, the storytelling event is also about keeping that virtual connection with extended family and friends in the era of social distancing.”

Bringing some much-needed levity this weekend, is Bongani Godide.
