Benoni Town Hall a lockdown homeless shelter

Toiletry packs were also handed out.

The Benoni Town Hall is one of four venues identified by the Ekurhuleni metro to help the homeless during the Covid-19 lockdown period.

It was opened to the homeless this morning (April 2) and when the City Times and Boksburg Advertiser visited the site, chairs had already been placed inside, spaced apart, and many homeless were already seated and had being screened by officials from the Gauteng Department of Social Development.

Divisional head of communications and media for the metro Nhlanhla Cebekhulu said the town hall can only house 120 people, as social distancing has to be adhered to.

He added that as part of their commitment to supporting the Gauteng province with the process of housing the homeless, the metro would ensure there is electricity and running water available.

“We are following the mandate to ensure the homeless are secured and given shelter in order to contain the spread of this coronavirus,” he said.
