The Ekurhuleni metro runs a 24/7 call centre to deal with service delivery issues, as well as a call centre for emergencies.

No funds to fix town hall

The renovation/refurbishment of the Benoni Town Hall has been placed on the Ekurhuleni metro’s maintenance plan and will require about R70- million to complete.

According to the metro’s spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, this is a “high-budget” item and there are no funds available at the moment.

“As soon as funding is released, the work can be done, but unfortunately other higher priorities require the allocation of available budgets.”

Free first-aid training

The Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Services (DEMS) is offering free basic first-aid training to members of the public to enable them to offer a basic response when faced with emergency situations.

The training includes CPR, basic firefighting and emergency evacuation and a home safety talk.

How to apply:

• Send a request to the DEMS office (details below) or apply at any Ekurhuleni fire station.

• A minimum of 10 people and a maximum of 25 are required for a training session to take place.

• Training is offered to any organised group (crèches, schools, organisations, community policing forums, social clubs).

Service delivery issues (086 054 3000):

• Tell the operator the reason for the call and specify the nature of the problem.

• Your name in full (spell it out if needed).

• Your contact number/s.

• Your address and the nearest crossroad (spell it out if needed).

• The suburb and town where the problem is (e.g. Northmead in Benoni)

• The nearest landmarks.

Emergency, life-threatening situations (011 458 0911):

• Tell the operator what has happened and what help is needed.

• Give your full name and contact details.

• Provide the address (suburb, town, street address) and nearest landmark.

Wait for the operator to finish before hanging up and make sure you:

• get a reference number to make follow-ups and

• get the name of the call centre operator.
