Lion Kings FC took on Waar Was Jy FC in a Benoni North Super League match on February 16.

Lion Kings failed to build momentum to extend their winning streak in the league as they drew 2-2 against Waar Was Jy.

A victory would have put them in the third spot on the log, giving them four points’ difference against their rivals, but they remain in fifth spot and their opponents at ninth.

Coach of Lion Kings Rodney Mzizi felt that his team was not fit enough for the game as they did not make enough of an effort during training.

“Our first touch of the ball was good and opened our chances of winning, but play overall wasn’t up to standard,” Mzizi said.

“Our main goal is to win so that we can use the money for transport, as we often struggle to get to our games.”

Akhona Njilo, a Lion Kings player, said they really need to win this league as it would get them one step closer to achieving their dreams.

“The team has been doing great throughout the season.

“We are united and our goal is to see ourselves playing in the PSL,” he said.

Waar Was Jy has been part of the Benoni North Super League for three years and a team for four years.

“My team is well organised.

“We never go to a game unprepared, but during this game there was no follow-up,” said Nhlanhla Nkabinde, coach of Waar Was Jy.

The team struggles due to a lack of sponsors and also with transport.

“I have been with the team for three years and I know every struggle.

“If we win this league, half of our problems will be solved,” said Linda Mnguni, a Waar Was Jy player.

The Benoni North Super League has been in existence for more than 30 years.

Deputy president of Benoni North Local Football Association (BNLFA) Donald Sekgobela said they would like more teams coming on board to register and be part of BNLFA, which will enable players to adapt quickly when they get to a professional football level.

“We would like to appeal to business people and local authorities to partner with us, so that we can bring back the glory days of local football in an advanced manner,” Sekgobela said.
