Man robbed of more than R35 000 inside a taxi in Putfontein

A case of armed robbery was opened at the police station.

The Putfontein police are warning residents to avoid withdrawing large sums of money after a man was robbed of R35 850 on February 13 in Durant Road.

Spokesperson Const Raider Ubisi said it is alleged that the man had just withdrawn the money before he boarded a taxi from Benoni to Barcelona, in Etwatwa.

“As the taxi was driving along Durant Road near Small Street, in Putfontein, one of the passengers asked the driver to stop as he wanted to get out,” said Ubisi.

“Suddenly, the taxi was cornered by two vehicles, one in front and other in the back.”

Ubisi said about eight men got out of the cars and approached the taxi.

“One of the men pointed the firearm at the victim while two others searched him.

“They stole the man’s money and a cellphone, a birthday cake and a KFC bucket meal from him.”

A case of armed robbery was opened at the police station.

Police urge anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact the station on 011 845 6315.
