A 47-year-old man was arrested for impersonating a police officer on January 29 at the SAPS Vehicle Pound in Mackenzie Park around 1.30 pm.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said the vehicle pounding commander alleges that while she was on duty, she received a call from the security guard at the gate.

“The guard asked if she had an appointment with someone because there was man who claims to be a police officer at the gate looking for her,” said Sekele.

“She then told the guard she didn’t have an appointment, the guard then walked the man into the commander’s office.”

Sekele said the man was carrying a docket with documents that had a police emblem and a police two-way radio.

“When he was questioned, he failed to provide clear answers, and was immediately arrested,” she said.

Upon further investigations, it was established that the man is linked to several cases, one of which was of having previously impersonated a police officer. However, the charges were withdrawn.

The police are appealing to anyone who may have been robbed by individuals pretending to be police officers to contact them. These include victims who might have been told by the bogus police officers that the police have recovered their stolen or hijacked vehicles, and to get their stolen or hijacked vehicles back, the victims would have to first to deposit the money at Shoprite.
