Well-known CBD businessman dies

The family lived in Farramere then Northmead before settling into their family home in Morehill, where they have lived for the past 23 years.

Morehill resident Timothy Mayson died in the early hours of January 9 in the Life The Glynnwood Hospital after a short illness, with his family at his bedside.

“Tim has been a regular figure on the Benoni Plaza since starting his career at His Image clothing store in 1974,” said his daughter-in-law, Kirsty Mayson, on behalf of the family.

“He was married to Denise in April 1975 and after a short stint living in Kempton Park they settled in Benoni permanently in 1988 with their two children, Dallas and Tammi.

“He was born in Natal, his father (Cedric Mayson) was a preacher and humanitarian and the family moved a lot. They settled on the East Rand in his later years and he met his wife when they were both living in Germiston.”

In 2003, the 65-year-old became one of the founding partners of Nelsinis – the upmarket men’s clothing store located on Prince’s Avenue.

In 2015, he was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a degenerative lung disease that eventually left him on permanent oxygen, but that didn’t stop him from being at work to greet his loyal customers at the Nelsinis store.

“In fact, he was at work the day before being hospitalised on December 31.

“When he wasn’t working his favourite place to be was at home with his family, watching sport and spending many happy hours in his workshop making and fixing things, and playing with his grandson.”

Tributes that have come in since his death describe Tim as having been a man of great kindness and generosity and of a man that was very well respected by people from all walks of life.

“He had a kind word and smile for everyone and went out of his way to help his customers and support his family.

“He will be remembered fondly by the greater community as a whole.”

He is survived by his wife Denise, children Dallas and Tammi, daughter-in-law Kirsty and his grandson Tristan.

As per his wishes no funeral will be held, but tributes can be sent to Nelsinis at Shop 10F Prince’s Avenue which will be passed on to the family.
