A 12-year journey for most matriculants reached its climax on January 8 when matric learners received their final results.

Hoërskool Brandwag’s top achiever, Tasha Erasmus, was elated with her eight distinctions after years of striving for the very same.

She received distinctions for Afrikaans, English, mathematics, accounting, life sciences, physical sciences, computer applications technology and life orientation.

“I was very excited when I received the results as this was my dream since Grade 10,” said Tasha who was also head girl at the school for 2019.

“I did eight subjects with computer applications technology (CAT) being the extra subject.

“My reason for this is I wanted to become more computer literate especially because of the opportunities that will arise in the fourth industrial revolution.

“Although my dream became a reality, a lot of hard work went into achieving this feat.

“I had to attend classes after school, missed some practical classes, juggle my sporting and cultural activities, which include athletics and drama, but I was still determined to push through it all.

“I’m an only child so I know I’m my mom and dad’s pride and joy and they often tell me this.

“Early mornings, late nights, not enough time to sleep and no real time for socialising all formed part of the journey.

“I’m grateful for the support my school offered me and I had great opportunities to grow.

“My teachers were also very helpful.”

When asked what her favourite subject was, Tasha joked that it was mathematics until the final exam.

The teen plans on studying occupational therapy at the University of Pretoria and also wants to be involved in extracurricular activities while on campus including joining the student representative council.

Her message to the class of 2020 is simple:

“Always try your best no matter the difficulty or challenges you face.”

According to Umalusi, the Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training, the class of 2019 was the sixth Grade 12 cohort to write final examinations under the Curriculum Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS).

Apart from a load-shedding incident in the country and the threat of protest action in the North West resulting in the delay of some examinations, there were no systemic irregularities reported.
