Benoni mathematician giving back by teaching maths free of charge

Pierre Jacobs, a mathematician by profession, is offering free math lessons to senior phase learners in Grades 10, 11 and 12 every Saturday from January 18.

He started the programme last year to help learners come to grips with the subject, especially those who cannot afford a tutor.

“I believe those who have received much must give much,” he said.

“God has given me the ability to teach children mathematics and I will do so.

“I have seen lots of dreams shattered because children were unable to pass maths.”

Jacobs added that math is a gateway subject into university and if a learner cannot pass with at least 50 per cent at the end of their matric year it limits their study options.

“I want to make a positive contribution as lives are being destroyed due to a lack of funds.

“If I can push a learner to get 60 per cent, I will have the privilege of knowing I helped launch someone’s career,” Jacobs said.

Classes start from 9am to 10am in Afrikaans and 10am to 11am in English at the Dutch Reformed Church Benoni North, corner of Kerk Street and 11th Avenue.

Jacobs is also appealing for donations for the Benoni Satellite House of Abraham Kriel to provide the children with new educational software and school supplies.

There is also the opportunity to sponsor a child’s transport costs to attend his math lessons.
