EMPD officers arrested 40 suspects and recorded six fatalities during the festive season in the Benoni area.

“The 40 suspects were arrested by EMPD officers between November 29, 2019, and January 1,” said EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng.

“The six fatalities were recorded by EMPD officers between December 1, 2019 and January 1.”

Fatalities:

• A pedestrian, knocked by a JMC Special Utility Vehicle on the N12 freeway direction east by the Daveyton train station on December 7, dies.

• A driver dies after his bakkie lost control, rolled and crashed into the wall on the N12 freeway direction east near the Putfontein off-ramp on December 8.

• A pedestrian died after he was knocked over by an SUV on the N12 freeway direction west by Tom Jones on December 8.

• Two motor vehicles colliding left a driver dead on December 22 on Springs Road in Crystal Park.

• On December 25 a driver and the woman passenger died after their bakkie lost control and crashed into trees, at the corner of Main Reef and Hospital roads.

Arrests:

• From November 29 to November 30, 24 male drivers between the ages of 29 and 52 were stopped and breathalysed by precinct officers on Princes and Ampthill avenues, Oos Street, Bunyan Street and Harper Road. They were arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol/being intoxicated and detained at the Benoni Police Station following roving roadblocks.

• Two men were arrested outside a fast food restaurant at the corner of Bunyan Street and Elston Avenue for the possession of drugs on December 9. The duo had one block of khat, quarter moon of cocaine, one piece of rock, 25 knotted plastics of nyaope valued at R3 400, and R1 370 cash were recovered.

• On December 11 three men were arrested at the Benoni Plaza for drugs valued at R1 500, and R940 cash. The trio was charged with possession and dealing in illicit substances.

• Benoni Flying Squad officers and police found a reported hijacked vehicle abandoned on the corner of Snake Road and Voortrekker Street on December 12. In collaboration with Tracker SA (vehicle and valuable goods tracker company), not very far from where the robbed/hijacked Iveco was recovered, the last coordinates readings of a tracker pointed officers to a warehouse in Apex industrial site and a storage building on Detroit Street was visited.

• 10 male occupants between the ages of 20 and 48, including the building owner, were found sorting out R500 000 worth of boxes containing MAQ washing powder.

• On December 20, near the Tom Jones off-ramp, the EMPD chief of police, Jabulani Mapiyeye, stopped a motorist for driving inconsiderately. The man was breathalysed and the alcometer device revealed that the motorist was over the limit (0.53).

Breakdown:

• 25 intoxicated drivers.

• Five in possession and dealing in narcotics.

• 10 in possession of stolen goods.
