Keeping up with Council

Work on the demolition of the Benoni Plaza has been postponed to the first quarter of 2020.

Plaza demolition update

Work on the demolition of the Benoni Plaza has been postponed to the first quarter of next year.

Ekurhuleni metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe said the appointment of demolition contractors was delayed due to supply chain management processes. The City Times reported earlier this year that the demolition was anticipated to take place in July, but the metro was unable to carry this out as a contractor could not be secured in time and the date was then moved to October.

Millions to boost township economies

Mayor Mzwandile Masina, the Minister of Small Business Development Khumbudzo Mtshavheni and National Empowerment Fund CEO Philiswe Mthethwa launched the Ekurhuleni Community Enterprise Development Fund (ECEDF) in KwaThema on December 6.

The ECEDF is designed to support the development of community enterprises in the form of individual entrepreneurs, small, micro and medium enterprises, cooperatives, informal traders and formal businesses.

It provides financial and non-financial assistance to address township economy, industrialisation and human development, among others. Application forms are available at Ekurhuleni Customer Care Centres and at ww.nefcorp.co.za

DA brings urgent motion on basic services

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni recently brought an urgent motion to council to compel the metro to deliver basic services.

According to alderman André du Plessis, DA Shadow MMC for Environment and Waste Management in Ekurhuleni, the Speaker of Council, alderman Patricia Kumalo, declined the motion and it was not heard in council.

“This despite residents and the DA calling for better and improved services as rampant power failures, widespread water outages and non-delivery of refuse removal grips the metro,” said du Plessis.

“Despite numerous top management meetings with various departments, the failure of basic services continue and residents are growing increasingly frustrated.

“We also called on the mayor to take action against the relevant MMCs and for the City Manager to investigate the HODs and top officials responsible for the smooth delivery of services.”
