Robbers targeting doctors rooms, police warn

Police urge anyone with information to visit their nearest police station or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

The Benoni Police are urging doctors to take extra safety measures in their practices following several recent robberies at such premises.

On December 3, a case of business robbery was reported after a doctor’s practice in Lake Avenue was robbed at around 1.50pm.

Spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said the perpetrator’s walked into the medical practice and enquired at reception about booking an appointment.

“They then walked out, came back inside and held the receptionist at gunpoint, demanding valuables,” said Sekele.

The robbers fled with an undisclosed amount of money.

On November 26, in Mackenzie Park at around 3.40pm, another doctor’s practice was robbed.

Sekele said the two suspects threatened the receptionist and the doctor with a firearm.

“They then took the receptionist’s wedding ring, cellphones and an undisclosed amount of money,” she said.

Another incident was reported on November 19, at Alliance near Kingsway.

Here, Sekele said, two men threatened the receptionist with a firearm, took her to the doctor’s office and then threatened the doctor too.

They stole the doctor’s laptop, cellphone and an undisclosed amount of money.

The receptionist and doctor were locked in a bathroom.
