“There has been a decrease in assault cases in Sector Two (Chief Albert Luthuli) because police monitor liquor outlets by conducting operations weekly,” said Mopeli.

“In most cases, alcohol and drug abuse lead to assaults.”

Mopeli explained that victims of abuse have the right to apply for a protection order at the nearest police station or magistrate’s court or lay a criminal charge.

“Once a charge has been laid, police assist victims with empathy and care and also provide them with victim counselling.

“We also provide them with medical attention and inform them of support services available or alternative shelters, if needed.”

Social worker Thakasile Lusenga educated residents on parenting skills and court processes for applying for foster care.

She also urged young mothers to take responsibility for their children this festive season as some leave their children with grandparents and don’t return for days.

Mopeli also pleaded with the community to be alert this festive season.

“Police will be conducting patrols to ensure people don’t drink and drive, as innocent people lose their lives,” she said.

“We also encourage residents to report crime as soon as possible, as they are our eyes and ears.”

She also mentioned that crime in Sector One has decreased, but in Sector Three and Four thefts out of a motor vehicle and livestock theft is problematic.
