Rudo Institute empowers aspiring entrepreneurs

The institute aims to bring resources and opportunities to people in the township.

The Rudo Institute, formerly known as the Daveyton Book Club, is encouraging aspiring young entrepreneurs to participate in their business development courses.

The non-profit company is a higher education institution based in Daveyton and founded by Sarah Madingwana and Kwandile Skhosana.

Madingwana and Skhosana built the institute after they saw how inaccessible tertiary education was, especially for people in the township.

The young community developers said they believe in a South Africa where everyone has equal access to affordable vocational, technical and higher education.

“The reality now is that Ekurhuleni is the fourth largest municipality in South Africa and only 38 per cent of people have Grade 12, and 11 per cent have higher education,” said Madingwana.

“The Rudo Institute’s aim is to bridge this gap. We are a state-of-the-art, accessible and cost effective institute for people between the ages of 17 to 35 years old.”

Skhosana said the institute provides a supportive environment which inspires hope, leadership and purpose to young people.

The Business Development Course offered by the institute is a NQF Level Four with 149 credits accredited with ServiceSETA (Services Sector Education and Training Authority) through a partnership with Startup Academy.

The course includes new venture creation, entrepreneurial law, business development and financial planning.

The course duration is five days from Monday to Friday at 9am until 4pm.

They also offer co-working space or a resource centre for local entrepreneurs and students.

“We have realised that local entrepreneurs in townships usually don’t have offices to work from, which is why we felt it was important to provide a supportive environment for them,” said Kwandile.

Members of our community can book Rudo Institute to host their own events on Saturdays and Sundays.

The institute will be hosting a business ideation workshop on December 7.

The young entrepreneurs will be given an opportunity to pitch their business ideas for possible funding.
