Lakefield resident rewarded for business excellence

The TBW, spearheaded by Karthigasen Moothsamy, brought together captains of industry in the Indian community from across South Africa as well as delegates from Mauritius.

Lakefield resident and businessman Shunmogum Moodley, known as Krishna, recently received the Outstanding Business Achievers Award at the first annual Tamil Business Warriors (TBW) gala ceremony held at Emperors Palace.

Krishna was already an entrepreneur at the tender age 12 when he would sell fruit and vegetables after school hours.

He matriculated from William Hills Secondary School in 1963 and initially pursued a career in teaching.

He founded a driving school in Boksburg in 1970, and was appointed as secretary and later treasurer of the South African Institute of Driving Instructors (Saidi).

In 1990 he completed his degree in road transportation at the Rand Afrikaans University (RAU), now known as the University of Johannesburg.

In 1992, Krishna founded his transport company which went onto make national waves, and was awarded the Supplier Golden Award for eight consecutive years.

Krishna also served the Tamil community for two terms as treasurer on the Tamil School Board, and in 1996 was appointed by the Congress of Business Economics as the first Tamil Businessman.

In 2000, Krishna retired at the age of 55.

Today, at the age of 74 he continues to serve passive roles in business ownership, truck sales, the property market and more recently, an ice-cream factory.

He is a proud husband of Pathmavathie Moodley, father of four children and grandfather of eight grandchildren.
