Residents urged to report water leaks

The Ekurhuleni metro is urging all residents to reduce water leakages by urgently reporting all leaks they see, as well as to help by fixing private leaks on their properties.

Water is becoming scarce due to climatic conditions characterised by high temperatures and low rainfall.

Ekurhuleni metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe said: “The metro’s water reservoirs are running at reduced levels and some parts of the metro are experiencing low water pressure.”

The metro is expected to maintain and repair all water main pipelines up to the water meter within 48 hours of being reported.

He added that the metro has preventative maintenance to curb the leakage problems, which differ from area to area because of differences in infrastructure.

“The metro responds to all reported leaks that are on the water network in the metro, including domestic and industrial meters.”

Residents must report water leaks to the 24-hour services call centre on 086 054 3000 or on the My Ekurhuleni App.

Siyakhokha reaches milestone by exceeding 100 000 users

The Ekurhuleni metro has announced that its online municipal bill payment system Siyakhokha has reached just over 100 000 registered users in four months.

The platform helps the metro to collect revenue for municipal services rendered in a fast, easy and reliable manner.

Siyakhokha has entered the second phase of the system upgrade, adding features that are expected to make residents lives even better and simpler.

The payment system now allows for instant EFT payments. This means customers will now have a third payment method, in addition to Masterpass payments and debit orders.

This method will enable the customers to have money debited and/or collected immediately from their bank accounts.

These enhancement will ensure real-time transaction and payment of your municipal account, leading to improved service delivery and curbing unwarranted notifications and disconnections.

Registered Siyakhokha users will now receive statement notifications via SMS or email as soon as their new monthly statement is uploaded on Siyakhokha.

It will inform residents of the amount due and payment due date.

The metro continues to encourage all residents who have not registered to do so on www.siyakhokha.ekurhuleni.gov.za.

Once registered, residents will then be able to access, manage and pay their municipal account.

Residents can also contact the Siyakhokha call centre on 011 999 5102, Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm, and Saturday to Sunday from 8am to 1pm. Alternatively, email: Siyakhokha@ekurhuleni.gov.za

Number of unplaced learners reduced

The Gauteng Department Education (GDE) has reduced the number of unplaced learners from 34 358 to 29 862.

This demonstrates a steady increase of learners currently placed to 250 309, which represents 88.51 per cent of total applications received.

Of the number placed, 134 680 were placed in Grade One and 115 629 in Grade Eight.

Total applications received was 310 350.

Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said are committed to place the remaining 29 862 (10.52 per cent) unplaced learners by November 30, 2019.

“It is important to remind the public that a total of 27 563 parents have not submitted or do not have documents.

“We will announce on how they will be assisted in due course as we are currently not be able to accommodate those parents who didn’t apply until we place all outstanding learners.”

The department is administering the 2020 admission process under the new Regulations and Feeder Zones Policy.

Parents can apply at any school, but placement depends on available space and capacity of the school.

Capacity of the school is a function of the size of the school and the number of current Grade One and Eight learners who have been retained or do not pass to the higher grades.

Furthermore, placement in terms of the revised regulations follows this order of priority:

1. Applicants with home address closest to the school within the feeder zone

2. If the school still has space, applicants with siblings are placed. If there is no space, siblings are placed at a school with available space within the feeder zone.

3. After criteria one and two are exhausted, applicants with a work address within the feeder zone are placed, if the school still has space. If not, the learners will be placed where there is space available.

4. Subject to space availability, learners whose parents live within a 30km radius of the school are placed.

5. Finally, learners whose parents live beyond the 30km radius of the school are placed, if the school has space.

Parents that do not prefer the offer of placement should lodge an objection with the district. Objection forms are available online at www.gdeadmissions.gov.za or at the district office.

Should the parent remain dissatisfied with the outcome of the objection, the parent may complete an Appeal Form available online at www.gdeadmissions.gov.za and email to Admissions.Hotline.@gauteng.gov.za. Parents are urged to follow this process to address concerns.

Parents with admission-related queries can contact the department’s call centre on 0800 000 789, email gdeinfo@gauteng.gov.za or visit the nearest district admission centre.
