Meet your new sports journalist

Welcome to the BCT family, Jemma!

With a love for writing and sport, Jemma Buys is already very at home in her role as sports journalist for the City Times.

The former Benoni High School girl says writing brings out the best in her.

“I was never the popular girl at school; I was quiet and enjoyed reading and writing in my free time, letting all my positive emotions flow and all the while dreaming of being a journalist.”

Her love for sport was nurtured from a young age – Jemma got her first Sharks shirt when she was three.

“With much thanks to my dad, Gavin, especially, I’m sport mad.

“I played 7’s rugby for Botswana when I was 15 and always loved watching WWE Smackdown and RAW with my brother, Reece.

“My husband, Michael, is one of the biggest sports fans I know – if he could play every sport going on he would.

“I’ve spent many a weekend on the sidelines cheering his team on.

“To this day, my idea of the best afternoon out is to be on the couch at my dad’s house watching the Grand Prix or Springboks, Sharks or Liverpool games with my dad, husband, brother and stepmom, Lulu.

“The day I heard I’d got the job of sports journalist at the City Times was the best thing that has happened to me this year.

“I can’t wait to meet the sporting community and do their achievements proud, for the whole of Benoni to read about.”
