Be careful when driving on the N12 west

The suspects drove off with the vehicle, a bag, laptop, tablet and wallet with an undisclosed amount of cash in it.

The Benoni police are extremely concerned about the safety of motorists travelling along the N12 (west) towards the Daveyton off-ramp after several hijackings.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said on October 23, around 10.30am, a man driving an X-Rider Double Cab was the latest victim of a carjacking incident.

“The man was driving along the N12 west when the driver of a double cab silver bakkie flicked his lights at him and told him there were fire sparks under his vehicle,” said Sekele.

“He then stopped his vehicle on the side of the road, stepped out and went to check.”

Sekele said the other bakkie stopped a few metres away from the victim. They then reversed their vehicle towards his car.

“The victim went back inside his vehicle; two men came out of the other bakkie, one of them jumped into the passenger seat and threatened the man with a firearm,” she said.

“The two men drove with the victim to an unknown location where he was instructed to get inside a Toyota Yaris.”

Sekele added that the Toyota Yaris dropped him off at an unknown open veld.

The suspects drove off with the vehicle, a bag, laptop, tablet and wallet with an undisclosed amount of cash in it.

A case of carjacking was opened at the Benoni SAPS.

On October 23, around 1pm, a driver of a UD 8 ton truck was hijacked on the N12 near Snake Road.

Sekele said a Toyota single cab bakkie, with blue police lights, that was driving behind the truck the driver also flicked the lights to show him that something was wrong with the vehicle.

“When he avoided them, the bakkie then overtook him, and put on the blue lights pretending to be the police,” said Sekele.

“He then stopped the truck on the side of the road and the bakkie drove off.”

Sekele said as he was looking underneath the truck, suddenly four men came behind him, assaulted him, forced him into the boot of an unknown white motor vehicle and drove away.

He was then dropped off at an unknown area.

The spokesperson said they urge motorists to be vigilant at all times.

“Avoid stopping on the side of the road. Rather stop at the nearest garage even if you are stopped by the police.”

Police urge anyone who has fallen victim of this crime to come forward with any information.
