Tambo Memorial Baby Pack Network paints for a good cause

This non-profit organisation serves the community by distributing baby packs for newborns to the Tambo Memorial hospital’s maternity, neo-natal and ICU wards.

The Tambo Memorial Baby Pack Network held another very successful painting fund-raiser on Saturday (October 19), at the Cherry Lane Café, in Northmead, raising R9 500.

However, in order to standardise the baby packs, they need cash to buy the items that the packs are short of.

Participants paid R300 each to take part in painting a box and the ticket included lunch, a goodie bag, paints, a box, brush, pencil and an instruction.

The organisation hosts two fund-raisers a year and most of its funding comes from individuals.

Baby Network director Christa Cradock said, “We go to the hospital in Boksburg every week to provide bags for the moms and babies in the maternity ward.

“Many of these babies are going home wrapped in newspapers and plastic bags, so we give the moms clothing for the babies as well as some toiletries.”

About 80 bags of love are distributed weekly, she added.

In 2018, the NPO delivered 3 186 bags of love and hope to new moms, and, to date, they have delivered 2 935 bags to the hospital.

“Apart from meeting their immediate needs of clothing, we also provide information to help prevent child abandonment,” Cradock said.

“We have two teams, the Boksburg team and the Benoni team, and each does its own fund-raising and packs their own bags.

“The 2 935 bags are made possible by the two teams alternating responsibility each week,” said Cradock.

Tambo Memorial Baby Pack Network also consoles moms who had a stillbirth by giving them a special bag packed with treats, toiletries and some cosmetics.
