FOLLOW UP: Metro to help rebuild Max informal settlement

As previously reported by the City Times, hundreds of people were left homeless after the settlement went up in flames on September 30.

The Ekurhuleni metro is assisting the residents of the Max informal settlement next to Great North Road to rebuild their burnt-down shacks.

“The shacks provided by the metro are being built where the burnt settlement once stood,” said Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Gadebe.

“The fire destroyed more than 400 shacks and the current residents are being housed at a temporary shelter in Kempton Park and are being provided with humanitarian assistance.

“This includes donations from aid organisations.

“The rebuilding of damaged shacks started on October 12 and they are being built in a blocked formation to allow for easy access of emergency vehicles and provision of basic services, such as water and sanitation.”

One of the disaster survivors, Poponapi Lou, said: “What I am most grateful about is that we now have spaces between our shacks and this will play a huge role in mitigating the high speed at which fire spreads in the future.”
