Teacher scoops award for computer applications technology excellence

No stranger to ISPA, Hains also received the award when he won the 2015 Tech Teacher of the Year Award.

Rynfield resident Matthew Hains was named the 2019 Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) Tech Teacher of the Year at a recent awards ceremony.

Hains, who teaches computer applications technology (CAT) at Saheti Secondary School in Bedfordview for Grade 10 to Grade 12, said he was happy to receive the award.

He was one of ten finalists competing for the South Africa’s longest-running Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education accolade, held at the Internet Week (iWeek) in Johannesburg.

“For the competition we had to develop a lesson plan on integrating technology in education,” he explained.

“After formulating a lesson plan we had to implement it by teaching it to the learners as well as reviewing it and justifying the use of the technology.”

Hains used the Minecraft education edition to introduce hardware concepts in a virtual world.

“In the virtual world, the learners were ants among hardware, so they were interacting with the actual device.”

He added that it was “really nice to also receive compliments from learners regarding the award.”
