[LISTEN] Youth marches in CBD against gender-based violence

Also present on the day were members of the iThemba Rape and Trauma Support Centre and the Benoni SAPS.

Young people from across Ekurhuleni gathered in the Benoni CBD on September 18 to march against the recent scourge of femicide and gender-based violence seen in the country.

Marching under the hashtag #AmINotLoudEnough, the aim was to deliver a memorandum to the Benoni Magistrate’s Court before proceeding to the Benoni SAPS.

Fifteen-year-old Mbali Dube was the force behind the awareness campaign.

“We want to break the silence on femicide and gender-based violence.

“We feel that the justice system is failing us.

“Too many killings are happening. How many more must happen before something serious is done?

“There is not enough being done about the situation.

“It has to begin with telling the guy at the corner who flirts with you where to get off, .

“We are also encouraging male participants to join us to fight this battle,” she says.

Seventeen-year-old Lerato Tsoka also shared her views on the SAPS, the justice system and the youth banding together to take a stand against femicide and gender-based violence and she also highlighted some points in the memorandum.

Benoni SAPS communications officer Capt Nomsa Sekele also commented on resources available.
