Where cameras will catch speedsters in Benoni

The NPA has granted permission for the cameras

The National Prosecuting Authority, in collaboration with the EMPD and Benoni’s senior public prosecutor, December Mthimunye, has signed off on the following sites for speed law enforcement via mobile cameras in Benoni (effective until December 31, 2020):

  • Great North Road – between intersections or at fixed points, Wordsworth Road and Webb Street, Hospital Road and Brentwood Park Road, Brentwood Park Road and Louisa Road.
  • Kingsway/Putfontein – between intersections or at fixed points, Modder Road and Lindelani Road, Lindelani Road and Main Reef/R29 Road.
  • N12 freeway – between intersections or at fixed points, Atlas bridge, Tom Jones Road, Voortrekker Road bridge, Snake Road bridge, Putfontein Road bridge.
  • New Modder – between intersections or at fixed points, Snake and Van Ryn Road, Van Ryn Road and Unity Street, near tree opposite entrance of a shop.
  • O’Reilly Merry Road – between intersections or at fixed points, Malherbe Road and Benoni Road/Oak Street
  • Pretoria Road – between intersections or at fixed points, Smith Street and Norman Street.
  • R29 Road – between intersections or at fixed points, Industry Road and Russell Street.
  • Range View Road/R23/Snake Road – between intersections or at fixed points, Heron Street and New Kleinfontein Road/Dube Street.
  • Snake Road – between intersections or at fixed points, Main Reef Road.
  • Van Dyk Road – between intersections or at fixed points, Commissioner Road and Glasglow Road.

The NPA permission is backed by the following conditions:

  • The authorisation is valid with immediate effect until December 31, 2020, after which a new application must be submitted.
  • In the new application facts must be set out that indicate how the speed law enforcement by camera was effective.
  • Conditions sent as a letter to the senior public prosecutor must be complied with.
  • The prosecuting guidelines as contained in part 29 of the policy directives contained in the NPA policy manual, copies of which can be obtained from the local senior prosecutor, must be compiled with.
  • All speed law enforcement must be conducted according to the Technical Committee for Standards and Procedures for traffic control and traffic equipment and that all technical and mechanical prescripts should be adhered to at all times.
  • Metro must ensure that camera warnings and speed limit signs are displayed and maintained.
  • Attention must be given to apply law enforcement during times when accident numbers are high.
  • The primary aim should be to enhance road safety and reducing accidents and road deaths.
  • The prosecuting guidelines as contained in Part 29 of the Policy Directives contained the NPA policy manual must be complied with.
  • All speed enforcement must be conducted according to the Technical Committee for Standards and procedure for traffic control and traffic equipment and that all technical and mechanical prescripts should be adhered to at all times.
  • It is recommended that above speed/red light violations enforcement by camera be approved as it is greatly assist in reducing motor vehicle accidents and causalities.
