Minnie turns 107

Everyone enjoyed cupcakes, finger-foods and later a slice of cake.

Minnie Burfitt, the oldest resident at the Old People’s Home in Western Extention, celebrated her 107th birthday on August 6 a day early as she was born on August 7.

Residents in the retirement village all gathered to help Minnie celebrate.

She walked in dressed in her Sunday best as she believes she is not old and wanted to walk on her own to her birthday celebration.

She survived a hip operation at 105 after she fell and broke her hip.

Minnie was born in England and moved to South Africa when she turned 21. She moved to Benoni when she turned 101 and has lived in the Old People’s Home for five years.

When the City Times asked her how she felt, she responded by saying “I am definitely dreaming right now.

“I am overwhelmed and I think I need to wake up,” she said.

She had a princess-themed cake because the staff at the home believe she has had so many birthdays, “She is the queen of the ball,” they said.
