[WATCH] ANC updates Ward 29 residents on service delivery

The caucus also addressed illegal electricity connections and has made provisions for solar lighting for informal settlements.

The ANC caucus recently visited Ward 29 (Actonville/Wattville) to update residents on service delivery.

The meeting began at the Actonville Hostel, where the Ekurhuleni metro’s MMC for Human Settlements, Lesiba Mpya, was present.

A five-year IDP plan, which, according to Ward 29 candidate Clr Imtiaz Loonat, commenced in 2016, was discussed with locals.

Service delivery achievements included the resurfacing of streets in the ward, changing of water pipes, escalating the redevelopment of the hostel into a more humane environment with a revamp of roofing and painting, and the elimination of an old-sewer pump station and replacing it with a new system.

“The hostel was prioritised and was in need of maintenance to make this a more inhabitable environment for the hostel dwellers.

“A 100 per cent overhaul of the sewer systems was conducted and completed on June 21.

“The water supply was also restored after persistant low water pressure.

“Substantial work was completed, totalling around R2.3-million in costs.”

The caucus later met with other Actonville residents regarding a core focus of the meeting on ownership of council-owned stock.

“Around R24-m was allocated to the East for refurbishment of the flats in Actonville over the financial year,” said Mpya.

“There is a proposal for market-related rental rates.

“There are also proposals for ownership to be given to residents.

“Ownership will then entail that residents are solely responsible for maintenance of the flats.

“It is a huge financial responsibility, which could become a burden to some.

“The financial burden will shift to households and release municipality from any maintenance responsibilities.”
